Step 1
Suspect an addiction to pornography if a person is spending less time with family and friends. If he chooses to view pornography instead of taking part in his regular activities, he may be developing an addiction to pornography.
-
Step 2
Watch for indications that someone may be developing a tolerance to pornography if more and more pornography is required to reach the same level of sexual excitement.
-
Step 3
Consider that a dependence exists if viewing pornography is causing problems with a spouse or partner. For example, a person addicted to pornography often prefers masturbation over enjoying sex with one's partner, or thinks about pornographic images while having sex with a partner.
-
Step 4
Watch for signs that a person is risking his job by viewing pornography at work or spending a lot of money on pornographic materials. An addiction to pornography often results in severe financial problems.
-
Step 5
Pay attention to how often someone breaks their promises in order to view pornography. A pornography addict will promise over and over again to give up pornography, and will feel intense guilt and shame when he is unable to do keep those promises.
-
Step 6
Watch for lying and deceit. When confronted, a person addicted to pornography will often lie about her use of pornography, and about the time and resources that she spends on the addiction.
