Taking charge of one's own health is important these days. People are unable to rely solely on the insurance companies and administration to see that they are treated properly. If a patient has had certain tests or x-rays taken, they must see to it that the results reach the treating physician. Follow these steps to learn how to demand original x-rays.

1. Locate the current facility where the original x-rays are being stored. Many radiology offices have off-site storage facilities. Locating the x-rays can be just as important as demanding them.
2. Put your demand in writing. Without a signature, the original x-rays may not be released. Due to recent HIPPA privacy laws, the medical field is required to get signed releases by all patients requesting any sort of records including original x-rays. Be sure to date the demand for the original x-rays.
3. Submit the demand to the proper holder of the x-rays. Ask when they will be available for pick up or if they are to be shipped to another facility.
4. Allow ample time for the original x-rays to be prepped and ready for disbursement. Office staff will usually have this sort of request taken care of within a week or two.
5. Follow up on the demand if too much time has passed or if it is emergent. Making a phone call to the office will ensure that the demand for original x-rays has not been pushed to the wayside or simply forgotten.
