Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Step1
Decide what type of drafting you'd like to do. There are civil, architectural, mechanical and structural drafting disciplines. A civil drafter works on things like roadways and site plans, an architectural drafter works on interior building plans, mechanical drafting works on things like motors and a structural drafter draws things like bridge plans.
Step2
Make a careful study of the drafting schools available. Not all schools will give you the same education. Make a short list of the schools you find most appealing and make sure to call and get all the details of the program before enrolling.
Step3
Consider a community college or junior college program for drafting school if you might choose later on to get an engineering degree. If you go to a trade school, the credits you earn there may not transfer to a 4-year school.
Step4
Peruse informational drafting school websites like findyourartschool.com to get a better picture of what's available. Here you can search for drafting schools in your area and by engineering discipline.
Step5
Visit an engineering firm and do an informational interview. Ask for a drafting school recommendation from the person you are interviewing. In most cases, engineering firms know best what skills the industry is looking for and can help you choose a good drafting school.
