Follow these steps and learn to build a garage firewall.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Measure the interior garage walls that you will be using to build the firewall. Take the measurements twice to be sure you have the correct ones. These measurements will give you the correct amount of 5/8-inch Type X drywall to purchase. Don't forget to measure the ceiling as well.

  2. Step 2

Remove any existing sheetrock that may be on the walls. If no sheetrock is in place then you should have exposed plywood and 2-by-4 inch pieces of lumber that makes up the frame of the garage.

  3. Step 3

Start in one corner of the garage and begin screwing 5/8-inch Type X drywall to the studs. Follow around the entire garage covering every inch of the walls with the firewall material. Do not forget to cut the holes for light switches or electrical outlets where necessary. If forgotten, you may have to tear down the drywall and build again.

  4. Step 4

Build the ceiling next. Cover the entire ceiling with the firewall material. You will need to cut out holes for built-in light fixtures if there are any.

  5. Step 5

Cover the walls with plaster if you want a more finished look in the garage. This is necessary if you plan on painting the garage. Allow the plaster to dry completely before finishing with paint.
