How to Find an Aikido Instructor
Like most martial arts classes, aikido can be found in several large metropolitan areas around the country. However, tracking down a good aikido instructor can pose its own challenges. Unlike karate and even Judo, aikido classes are harder to find and you must be prepared to do a little digging.

1
Read the classified ads in the local newspaper to see if there is a martial arts center in your immediate area. Contacting any martial arts center will increase your odds of finding an aikido instructor.
-
2
Look at martial arts centers that don't explicitly advertise aikido instruction. Many of these places also offer aikido, but it simply isn't advertised because aikido is less popular than other forms.
-
-
3
Attend martial arts tournaments in your area. In addition to offering great entertainment, these tournaments give you a chance to meet people that are part of the martial arts culture.
-
4
Discuss relative strengths and weaknesses of different aikido instructors with other aikido students. Just like any other discipline, aikido instructors bring their own personality to the mat and it needs to be compatible with yours.
-
5
Commit to a short period of instruction with an aikido instructor to make sure what is offered meets your needs. It's important to allow a testing period before spending large amounts of money on an instructor who doesn't feel right.
-
6
Remember that it's your right to tell your instructor if you're dissatisfied. You are, after all, paying for a service.
