1
Mark the fabric scraps into circles. Use regular scissors to cut a piece of cardboard into a circle for a pattern or find something in your cupboard that you can use as a pattern for your covers. If you are using wide-mouth canning jars, the circle needs to be 7 inches in diameter. Small mouth jars use 6-inch circles. Cut the fabric with pinking shears.

2
Add trim to the edges of the circles if you wish. Sew narrow lace around the outer edge of the circle. Embroider flowers or initials on the circle. Sew on a small appliqué. If you don't want to pink the edges, use a serger to create a rolled hem.

3
Cut the elastic into 7 inch pieces for a large mouth jar and 6 inch pieces for a small mouth jar. Divide the elastic into quarters. Mark each quarter with a straight pin.
-
4
Fold the fabric circle into four parts. Mark the fold lines with pins as well.
-
5
Sew the elastic to the fabric circle two inches in from the outside edge using a zigzag stitch. Match the pins in the elastic and on the fabric circle as you sew. Gently pull on the elastic as you go to gather the fabric to the elastic.

6
Slip the cover on the jar. Tie a ribbon around the jar if you wish to further secure the cover.
