- Pet hamster.

Step 1
Start as soon as possible. The younger the hamster is, the easier he will be to shoulder train. Experts claim that between 5 and 12 weeks is the best time to begin, but get your hamster used to being handled before you try to train him.

Choose the right time of day when your hamster is most lively. Being nocturnal creatures, this will normally be in the evening or late at night but observe your hamster and see when he is most active.

Put the hamster directly on your shoulder keeping him supported with your hands. Talk gently to him and make encouraging noises while lightly stroking his fur. Repeat this several times until your hamster is accustomed to being there.

Pick your hamster up lightly in the palm of your hand and encourage him to walk up your arm by making coaxing noises and using a piece of food to show him the way. Give him the food only when he is in the correct position on your shoulder.

Hide some of your pet's favorite leaves or grains in the creases of your clothes on your shoulder or under a collar and over time your hamster will get used to this and run automatically to your shoulder in search of treats.

Remove your hamster as soon as he shows any signs of stress or discomfort. In order for the hamster to go willingly to your shoulder, it needs to be a desirable place.
