How to Buy VGA Gender Changers
Video Graphics Array, or VGA, is the standard analog display connector for most computers. VGA connectors can be found on more than just computer monitors, though. Many HD TVs, multimedia projectors, video game consoles and laptops have VGA connectors. When dealing with different VGA inputs and outputs, it may be necessary to buy a few VGA gender changers for compatibility.

Make sure you know which end is which. This seems simple enough, but before you buy a gender changer, you need to know what you're dealing with. The male end of a VGA connector is the side with the pins. There should be 15 pins arranged in 3 rows. The female end of a VGA connector has 15 holes that the pins on the male end fit into. The male end fits over the female end and typically fastens by screws on each side of the connector.

Figure out what VGA gender you need to change from. The standard VGA cable you are going to deal with probably has male ends on both sides. If you need a VGA gender changer for a typical VGA cable, you will need it to be female on one end. Also check to see what gender you need on the other end.

Look for VGA gender changers that are also adapters from another format. DVI, for example, is another popular video format. You can find DVI to VGA adapters that are also gender changers. Again, make sure you know whether you need male or female on each end of the adapter.

Buy mini VGA gender changers for laptops. Because of size limitations, VGA connectors on laptops are smaller and look a little different, but it is still VGA. If you want to plug your laptop into another monitor or a projector, you may have to buy an adapter that will also be a gender changer.
