Shaft mining is a method of excavation that that uses a vertical tunnel. A mine shaft is split into compartments with the largest called the cage. The cage is used to move workers and supplies beneath the Earth's surface much like an elevator. The skip is the second compartment and it is used to transport ore to the surface. The third compartment is an emergency exit.
