Creating a landscape design for your home intimidates many people if they've never done it before. Begin by considering the property's unique layout and the house's architecture before creating any design. Following these guidelines can help you choose the landscape design that best suits your residence.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Assess the aim of the landscape design. Bettering its appearance or making room for outside recreation provide two common purposes. Investigate the physical condition of the property such as its climate, soil and foliage.

  2. Step 2

Decide which recreational activities the property can sustain. For example, figure out which is the best spot for children to play. Think about the house's structure such as which entrance guests use the most.

  3. Step 3

Begin the design form by determining its style and theme. Common styles include tropical, urban, Japanese and Mediterranean. Common themes include movement, meditative, sound and nature. Both style and theme must respond to the house's framework.

  4. Step 4

Designate the landscape plants. Remember that plants make shade, hide unattractive views and impede fires. Collectively, the plants must make an attractive arrangement even when not blooming. Allow for the plants' natural forms, density, textures and colors. Also, ensure that the plants' colors match the house's colors.

  5. Step 5

Sketch a simple landscape design drawn to scale. Outline the entire property. Fill in the sketch showing the location of the house and its architecture. Add areas for planters on the edges of the property.

  6. Step 6

Focus next on the shape, quantity and location of the plants closest to the house. Finish by adding plants surrounding a pool area, gazebo or deck.
