Step 1
Write your spelling test based upon another current study subject. If your students are in the middle of reading about the Revolutionary War, make a list of words they will come across and add them to your spelling list.
-
Step 2
Combine your spelling test with targeted learning. Give the students the word list a few days before the test. Instruct them to learn the spelling and definition for each term. You can have them write the word then match it to the definition.
-
Step 3
Go techie. There are software programs on the market that can track your spelling words and generate tests for you, based upon criteria you input. If you're not ready to buy one, try a free one. Softweigh Multimedia offers a program, "Junior Spelling Tutor," that you can download for free. (See Resources)

Step 4
Prepare an oral spelling test. Just like a spelling bee, each student can step forward to spell a word. Grouping the students into teams can make learning even more fun.

Step 5
Try a Friday test. Teachers suggest giving children a spelling list for the week on Monday or Tuesday, giving them a few days to practice the words before testing on Friday. Review on Thursday for the best results.
