The Sony Playstation 3 is a powerful gaming console, but its ability to expand your home entertainment stretches beyond video games. The PS3 is also a powerful Blu-Ray player, and even if you have no desire to play video games, the PS3 can still be a great investment for the home entertainment connoisseur.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Pick your model. There are multiple models of the PS3, ranging in different features and hard drive sizes. If you strictly want a Blu-Ray player, you probably don't care about how many USB ports or memory card slots your PS3 has. The hard drive size probably isn't a big deal either, but the possibility of digital video recording with the PS3 means you may use your hard drive at some point. One thing you want to make sure your PS3 has for a great high-def experience is an HDMI output.
Step2
Look for a bundle. There are several PS3 bundles that include video games, but there are also a few that come with Blu-Ray movies. Look for entertainment packs that come with a few movies, there are some that let you choose what movies you want.
Step3
Find a used PS3. PS3 prices are high, and even though a PS3 is still cheaper than many Blu-Ray players, finding a used one can get you a quality Blu-Ray player at a great price. Check your local game stores or online auctions for a cheap, used Playstation 3.
Step4
Match your PS3 with a high-def TV and a killer sound system. In order to really experience Blu-Ray movies you need the ability to watch in high-def, so your standard definition TV isn't going to cut it. There are affordable HD TV options, or you may consider picking an HD monitor that can double as your Blu-Ray screen. Also try to get a surround sound system that can deliver immersive sound.
Step5
Try the PS3 for some games. So you may not be into video games, but if you have a PS3 in your house you might as well try it out. Rent a game or two, and you may be surprised by the high-def experience that video games can offer. Who knows, you may even get into gaming with your new Blu-Ray player.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure to get an AV output cable that matches your HD TV and sound. Look for component, VGA, DVI and HDMI cables.
