Candle making is a fun hobby and can be a great way to make gifts for those special to you. One of the oldest types of candles is the taper candle. Taper candles look beautiful on a dining room table and are simple to make. Follow the directions below to make yourself some beautiful taper candles today.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Heavy wire
  • Melting pot
  • Wax
  • Color or oils
  • Spoon
  1. Step 1

Prepare a taper dipper to use so that you can safely dip your wicks to create taper candles. You can do this by using a piece of heavy wire to create hooks that you can attach the wick to and hold while the wick sits in the wax.

  2. Step 2

Set up your melting pot and melt wax in it until it reaches 150 to 160 degrees Fahrenheit. The higher the temperature, the smoother the wax will be. A cooler temperature will give you a more rustic taper candle.

  3. Step 3

Add any type of color or oils to the melted wax and stir well.

  4. Step 4

Prime your wick by letting a small amount of wax dry over it completely before dipping your wick to make a taper candle. Attach the wick to the taper dipper you created.

  5. Step 5

Dip the wick into the wax and hold it there until you don't see any more air bubbles coming from the wax.

  6. Step 6

Allow the first layer of the taper to cool to warm before dipping the wick back into the melted wax.

  7. Step 7

Continue to dip the wick into the wax, letting the taper candle cool only slightly in between dips until it has reached the desired thickness. Trim the wick after it has cooled.

Tips & Warnings
  • Stir the wax every once in awhile in between dips to allow any air bubbles that have been forming in the wax to be released.
