How to Influence the Boss

Knowing how to influence your boss can be a very helpful tool in the workplace. Not only will day-to-day interactions go more smoothly, but your boss will think you have it all together you'll be at the top of her mind when it comes to giving raises and promotions.

1. Know his quirks. Smart bosses will be able to get past their personal quirks but not everyone does. Being aware of what they are helps you when you're trying to get your way at the office. You'll know which issues to stay away from and what you might not be able to change. Likewise, knowing what your boss likes can give you a foundation on which to build your ideas and proposals.

2. Do your homework and have reasons ready for each idea you want to implement. When you give your proposal to your boss, be sure to back up just why you think your idea is a good one. Explain the benefits of you implementing your idea, break down the costs and suggest how your idea might be funded. Also take responsibility for doing the major work, including training others in the new system, if necessary.

3. Be clear as you discuss your ideas. Doing all the homework in the world isn't going to help you if your boss doesn't know what you are talking about. Wasting your boss' time is a quick way to get him annoyed, so clarity is key. Present your case in a simple, easy-to-follow manner, and your boss is sure to listen to what you have to say.
