If you live in Colorado or South Dakota and have a management position recently secured with a casino, you need to get a key employee gaming license. There are several hoops to jump through in order to get a license, but if you go step by step, it's almost painless.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Application
  • Official set of fingerprints
Step1
Pay $150 to the South Dakota Gaming commission to fill out an application. This is non-refundable if you aren't given a license. In Colorado, pay a $250 non-refundable fee and a $1,000 deposit.
Step2
Fill out the pertinent information about your personal history on an application retrieved online. A key employee in South Dakota also needs to include history of marriages, children and the location of ex-spouses.
Step3
Answer the questions about any felony convictions and any felony convictions of your family. You also need personal references. History of past business- and gaming-related incomes and businesses are needed.
Step4
Supply three years of tax returns. You also need three credit references and, if you rent, rental history.
Step5
List your net worth. You need to list all your debt and assets to do this. Check all your records of accounts with assets and all accounts payable. You need to have balances to fill out the form.
Step6
Sign a release for background credit check and one for criminal check. Get your fingerprints taken at the local police department.
Step7
Appear before the board if necessary or pay your final $150 if accepted. If you're in Colorado, any funds from your $1,000 deposit will be returned after $62 per hour is removed for time investigating your background.

Tips & Warnings

  • In other states, these licenses are referred to as management licenses or Level 1 licenses. The procedures and applications are similar in all states but the fees vary.
