Outlook Express, the simple email software that comes with Microsoft Windows, provides a quick way to block all messages from a specific domain. You can block emails sender by sender, but blocking the entire domain is easier. However, blocking a domain blocks both spam and legitimate messages.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Open Outlook Express and click on "Tools."

  2. Step 2

Choose "Options" and select the "Junk Email" button.

  3. Step 3

Find the option "Permanently delete suspected junk email instead of moving it to the Junk Email folder." When blocking a common domain name, such as yahoo.com or hotmail.com, you may want the option of reviewing emails in the Junk Email folder. Select or deselect this option by clicking in the box.

  4. Step 4

    Choose the tab "Blocked Senders."

  5. Step 5

Select "Add" and a box will pop up. Type the domain name in the space provided. For example, enter "domainname.net" to block all messages arriving from that source.

  6. Step 6

Click "OK" to save that domain name to the list of blocked senders. Select "Add" to enter the next domain name, or click "OK" to close.

  7. Step 7

Add individual email addresses under the "Safe Senders" tab if you receive messages from friends or family who use the blocked domain name.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you choose to send messages to the Junk Email folder, open the folder and scroll through to select and drag legitimate messages into your Inbox. Then, right click on the Junk Email folder, and select "Empty Junk Email Folder." Click "Yes" in the pop up box to confirm that you want to delete all messages in that folder.

on 4/25/2008 Even though you are supposed to be able to block entire domains I haven't found this to be true. I continually get emails from Chinese domains and even though I put in to block @21cn.com, yahoo.com.cn, toone.com.cn, etc these emails still come through. And I got on the spamming list because I looked at 1 site when I was searching for an item. Each address must be blocked individually and if they change the first part (the part before the @) they get through. Am I not doing it correctly?
