No matter how much care you take with the sail of your catamaran, you'll eventually need to replace the entire sail. Replacing the sail can be a big expense. Before you purchase the new sail, there are some questions that you need to answer so that you can get the most appropriate one for your needs.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Look at your budget, which is one of the biggest determiners on whether to go new or used. If you decide to buy a used sail, visit the United States A-Class Catamaran Association or Sailing Texas, which are both websites that feature catamaran sails available for purchase.
Step2
Evaluate the experience level of the crew who uses that catamaran. You'll want a sail that performs to the capabilities.
Step3
Decide the type of sailing that you'll be doing. If you'll be racing then you'll want a sail that differs from the person that cruises.
Step4
Know whether durability is most important or performance.
Step5
Understand the different fabrics and their feel and uses. Check with the sail maker about the merits of several types of fabrics.
Step6
Tell the sail maker your location, average weather conditions, and whether you'll be sailing off shore. Ask for a recommendation.
Step7
Purchase a sail that is created for your brand of catamaran and size. If you aren't having one special ordered then find the sail that is made for your boat.
