A prison matron is the female counterpart of a prison warden. Prison matrons oversee the checking-in process for all female prisoners and, in most areas, for boys under the age of 14. She searches prisoners and is responsible for their care.

Step1
Become a prison matron by first doing well in your high school career. You must develop organizational skills and good communication skills. Get strong in the area of written communication as well. You must be able to write clear reports and keep good records if you want a job in the prison system.
Step2
Get a job with your county police force if you want to become a prison matron. In most county prisons, the prison matron is hired or appointed by the county sheriff. The sheriff usually chooses a candidate with some experience as a police officer. The sheriff sets the qualifications for this job description.
Step3
Consider doing clerical work for the sheriff's department while you get police officer training. Since the sheriff is the one who usually hires prison matrons and assistant prison matrons, tell the sheriff of your interest in becoming a prison matron. The sheriff can advise you as you work to accomplish your goal. He can explain the job requirements. You may be able to get an assistant prison matron position and work your way up.
Step4
Make sure that you have the necessary personality and temperament for this job. You must be able to deal with difficult situations. You must be prepared to face dangerous criminals and uncertain circumstances.
