Step 1
Stand back and look at the whole room first. If it's contemporary, add a fireplace mantel that's contemporary, but only if your room will stay contemporary. If your room is full of antiques, select an antique fireplace mantel. Look at the colors in your room and decide if those colors are likely to change. If so, select a mantel color that will go with many colors.
-
Step 2
Look at your fireplace and the material that's been used to build it. Wood mantels look wonderful if placed above a brick or stone fireplace. If your fireplace is rustic, consider selecting a rough-cut wood mantel. Determine the length of the mantel you want. Some mantels extend the whole length of the fireplace or beyond. Other mantels are shorter or stepped with shelves on either side.
-
Step 3
Determine how the fireplace mantel will be installed. If installing the mantel yourself, make sure you select a material that you can work with. Make sure you plan the installation to include added weight if using the mantel as shelving.
-
Step 4
Compare the different types of fireplace mantels that are readily available for the least expensive mantel. A plain wood mantel is usually the least expensive. Fireplace mantels can be made from many materials, including wood, stone or plaster. Many antique mantels are made of wood or plaster.

Step 5
Read safety recommendations before you select a fireplace mantel. Make sure the mantel is not painted with flammable paint and that it will be installed at a great enough distance from the source of the flames.
