How to Clean Lace Curtains

Lace curtains are delicate and beautiful to look at, but many people are not sure how to clean them. Lace curtains look elegant hanging under a pair of cloth curtains or drapes, or hanging alone as a window covering. Either way, lace curtains accumulate a build-up of dust and dirt that needs a certain degree of care to remove.

Things You’ll Need:

• Wash tub or basin
• Water
• Mild laundry soap
• Ammonia or borax
• Measuring cup
• Wooden curtain-drying rack

1. Remove your lace curtains form the curtain rods.
2. Add a mild laundry detergent to a basin or wash tub full of warm water.
3. Place two spoonfuls of ammonia or borax into the warm and swish to create sudsy wash water.
4. Put the lace curtains into the wash water.
5. Soak the lace curtains overnight or for no less then twelve hours.
6. Remove the curtains form the soapy water and rinse them out thoroughly.
7. Stretch the curtains back into shape, and dry on a wooden curtain-drying frame or lay them flat to dry.

Tips & Warnings

• Make sure to hang your curtains in a manner that allows them to be removed easily.
• If there is a tear in the lace, they can be sewn back together. If there is a larger hole, sew a piece of matching lace onto the curtain as a patch.
• If your washing machine has a hand-wash cycle, some lace curtains can be laundered in your machine. However, if you have any concerns or doubts about your particular lace curtains, it is always better to hand wash them.
• Do not wring out lace curtains. Roll them in a towel to remove the excess water.
• Never use the same rod to hang your lace curtains and your drapes or cloth curtains. They should always be placed on a separate curtain rod.
• Never lift wet lace curtains by the top as it causes them to tear.
