Things You'll Need:
- Garage door spring
- Socket set
- Winding rods
- Lubricant
-
Step 1
Measure the broken garage door spring. Garage door springs come in varying sizes to match the weight of the garage door and must be replaced with the same size spring.
-
Step 2
Consult local repair companies to either install a new spring or advise where a spring can be purchased. Many home improvement stores, such as Lowe's or Home Depot, carry replacement garage door springs. Online retailers also offer a wide variety of purchasing options.
-
Step 3
Remove the two end cones from the spring with the appropriate-sized socket and wrench. This will free the broken or damaged spring from their respective end fasteners allow the spring to be removed.
-
Step 4
Replace the spring and tighten the end cones securely. Use winding tolls or two steel rods to wind tension back into the garage door spring. Consult the garage door manufacturer's owner's guide for the correct spring torque.
-
Step 5
Inspect the entire garage door assembly for further damage. Garage door springs can come in pairs. Look over both to see if fatigue has affected both springs. Clean the entire assembly and lubricate moving parts.
