How to Adjust Chainsaw Chokes

A chainsaw has a carburetor and choke. The choke is what you use when you first start up a chainsaw in order to get fuel into the carburetor and the cylinder. You might have to pull the cord on your chainsaw three or four times before it cranks.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Adjust chainsaw chokes in order to regulate the amount of fuel that you are trying to get into the carburetor. The choke of a chainsaw is located on the carburetor. It normally has a button attached to a shaft which operates a flapper valve.

  2. Step 2

Know that the flapper valve in a carburetor is actually the choke. It operates on a pivot. Most choke cylinders are right behind the filter. This choke valve, when closed, seals the carburetor so that air cannot be sucked through the carburetor. This pulls more gas into the carburetor than normal in order to crank a chainsaw.

  3. Step 3

Crank the chainsaw and then release the chainsaw choke. This allows the air to mix with the fuel in right proportions to make the chainsaw run smoothly. If the chainsaw runs rough, the choke might not be opening all the way to let the air flow go through the carburetor. You might have to spray some lubricant on the shafts of the choke as a form of adjustment so that it will operate correctly.

  4. Step 4

Let the chain saw run a couple of minutes. If it does not smooth out in its running, you must adjust the needle valves in your carburetor. The needle valves are what mix the air and fuel in combination with each other so that your chainsaw will run correctly.

Tips & Warnings
  • If these steps do not correct the problem, you should get help from a small engine technician to adjust chainsaw chokes and check to see if there is another problem.
