Spring and summer isn't the only time for flowers. Many plants flower in the fall, competing with leaves for a vibrant color show. Here's how to plan for a fall flower garden.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fall flower seeds and plants
  • Garden soil
  • Flower fertilizer
  • Mulch
  • Space in the garden
  • Paper and pencils
  1. Step 1

Sketch the arrangement of the fall flower garden. Drawing a rough sketch helps determine where to plant the fall flowers.

  2. Step 2

Research to find out which flowers to grow in fall. Ask a local greenhouse salesperson or borrow a library book. If you know any gardening clubs around your area, ask a representative from the garden club which flowers grow great in the fall.

  3. Step 3

Buy fall flowers or seeds. Many home and garden stores start selling fall flowers and seeds at the end of summer. Common fall flowers include the chrysanthemums, pansies and asters. Some flowers such as marigolds can be extended into the fall season if you plant them at the proper time and maintain them and maintain them throughout fall. Find these flowers and seeds at local greenhouses and even on Internet garden retail sites.

  4. Step 4

Prepare the soil for the flower garden. Use an all-purpose flower fertilizer. Fluctuating temperatures may cause fluctuating soil temperatures. Add organic material to help maintain proper balance for fall flowers.

  5. Step 5

Plant the fall flower garden at the proper planting time. Fall flowers need time to become established. Start planting these flowers at the end of summer so they have time to establish before the first frosts.

  6. Step 6

Keep fall flowers watered properly. Stick your thumb into the soil. If your thumb comes out dry, it's time to water. If it comes out damp, wait another day before watering.

  7. Step 7

Mulch fall flower beds to conserve moisture and to keep the beds weed free. Mulch also helps the bed maintain a constant temperature.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use fall color schemes (red, yellow and orange) to make the fall flower garden visually appealing.
  • Set up a daily schedule of maintenance. Use a computer or a garden journal to help establish the routine.
