How to Install E-L Wiring in a Computer

Unlike rigid CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent) tubes, E-L wire flexes and can be twisted and bent. Not a particularly bright source of light when compared to CCFL or LED lighting; however, it works well for wrapping around hard drive cables and the rubber trim around case windows. E-L wiring can be purchased in kits and by length, in a number of cool colors.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • E-L wire kit
  • Philips screwdriver
  • Tape measure
  • Scissors
  • Super glue
  • Velcro strips
  1. Step 1

Turn off the computer and remove its power cord. Remove the side panel and lay the computer on its side. Lay the panel on a smooth, clean surface to protect the window.

  2. Step 2

Open the E-L wiring kit and layout the contents familiarizing yourself with all parts. Take this opportunity to read the installation guide.

  3. Step 3

Look inside and decide what you want to illuminate and how. Test fit your designs first without making them permanent to give an idea of what gets illuminated.

  4. Step 4

Keep the wire in place with crazy glue, RTV silicone or cable ties. If using silicone, it may be necessary to use some masking tape or other temporary adhesive tape until the silicone cures sufficiently.

  5. Step 5

Install the optional switch supplied with your lighting kit. The switch may be either a card-slot version or one requiring cutting or drilling the case as necessary in order to mount the switch.

  6. Step 6

Mount the voltage inverter wherever convenient with either double-sided tape or velcro. Press the inverter firmly in place to ensure adhesion. Connect the inverter to a spare 12-volt, 4-pin molex connector from the computer power supply. In the event you don't have a spare, some kits provide a splitter, or you can purchase one at most any computer retailer.

  7. Step 7

Replace the side panel closing the computer case. Connect the power cable and boot up. If you installed the optional switch, make sure it is turned on.

Tips & Warnings
  • E-L Wire requires a significantly higher voltage than the 12-volts it gets from the computer power supply. These lighting systems incorporate voltage inverters for that purpose. To avoid electrical shock or fire, never touch their output wires, powering an inverter without its load and never attempt to make the output wires longer without using high-voltage wire.
