How to Buy a Mop

Keeping your floors sparkling clean is largely dependent on the type of mop you purchase. The process of choosing a mop must take into account several factors, including the type of floor you want to clean and how durable the mop needs to be.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine what cleaning process you want to use for your floor, such as wet mopping, drying the floor, damp mopping or applying floor finish. Different cleaning processes work best with different types of mop fibers.

  2. Step 2

Choose the mop yarn that meets your needs. Mop yarns with polyester fibers work well for spreading floor finish, as well as other general-purpose uses. In contrast, mop yarns with rayon and cotton are best suited for floor drying because of their absorption power. Twisted mop yarn is best for cleaning rough surfaces. The mop quality depends upon the yarn as well as how it's constructed.

  3. Step 3

Select the size and style of mop that best suits your needs. Deciding between tail-banded, cut-end or looped-end depends upon the cleaning process you're undertaking. Tail-banded mops spread easily for overall floor coverage. Cut-end mops are typically the least expensive but may take longer to clean with. Looped-end mops are good for reducing shedding on your freshly mopped floors.

  4. Step 4

Consider the different mops' costs versus quality and performance when selecting the mop to buy. Then purchase the one you decide best suits your cleaning project's needs.
