It takes a strong individual to begin dealing with rape. Every person reacts differently in stressful or dangerous situations. Post traumatic stress disorder may follow after rape, along with a variety of ailments, so it's important to know how to deal with feelings of anxiety, depression and anger.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Contact a trusted friend or family member immediately, on who will be there for you in the long run. Emotional support is especially important right after rape occurs.

  2. Step 2

Call the police or go to the police station with that person right away and file a police report. Tell the officer you wish to prosecute the person who raped you.

  3. Step 3

Ask for a rape crisis counselor or advocate. This person will be there to support you throughout the night and into court, if the case is taken that far.

  4. Step 4

Get tested with the rape kit. Important semen, skin and hair can be collected at this time. Take a shower after the exam.

  5. Step 5

Find your own personal rape support group. Speak out to work through your feelings.

  6. Step 6

Take preventive measures, like a self defense class. Walk with a friend at night.

  7. Step 7

Realize that it's not your fault. You're a survivor, not a victim.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep a detailed written record of what happened, in case you go to court in the future.
  • Do not take a shower after you've been raped. As much as you'd like to wash off what happened, it may destroy evidence that can be used against the assailant.
