A slaughterhouse is a necessary operation to provide fresh meat to a community. If you feel there is a high enough demand for fresh meat but there isn't a slaughterhouse nearby it may be profitable for you to open one. There are several requirements you have to meet before you can open a slaughterhouse. Follow these steps to learn what they are.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine a location for your slaughterhouse. It needs to have plenty of available acreage and be far from other businesses and homes. Slaughterhouses will develop an odor that can offend others.

  2. Step 2

Establish a need for a slaughterhouse in the area that you have in mind. You must type a statement of need and include it with your application to your local county health department.

  3. Step 3

Compute the distance to the closest official slaughtering establishment. This will be a determining factor on whether or not there is a need for a slaughterhouse in the area that you propose.

  4. Step 4

Decide on your operating days and hours. Type this up and submit it with your application and statement of need.

  5. Step 5

Meet the requirements for zoning, sanitation, water and building permits. Once you have met these requirements you can complete your application and send it to the county health department with your license fee and typed statements.

  6. Step 6

Review the policies of "Intrastate Commerce in Food, Drugs and Cosmetics" as well as "Custom Slaughterer-Handling of Custom Meat Food Animal Carcasses at Meat." You will also need to read up on the requirements for sanitary operations of custom meat facilities, custom farm slaughtering and custom slaughtering establishments. You will be held accountable for knowing all of this information.

  7. Step 7

Have your facility and equipment inspected by your local health department. Upon approval of your application and the passing of your inspection you will receive a license to open your slaughterhouse.
