Joining youth theater programs can help a child develop his appreciation for theater. Many opportunities are available for the young person who is interested in theater. Simply check with school, community and professional establishments to find an opportunity to join a choice theater program.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Consult with school teachers. Teachers who are involved in music, art and theater may be able to refer you to theater programs for kids. Inquire about after-school programs, theater arts mentors and extracurricular activities.

  2. Step 2

Check local newspapers, magazines and websites for youth theater auditions, shows and notices. Enter your contact information on websites to receive electronic and paper newsletters. These newsletters may have advertisements for youth theater programs.

  3. Step 3

Look into Children's Theater. An advantage of participating in Children's Theater is that the directors are likely to cast all those who audition, guaranteeing stage experience.

  4. Step 4

Get involved in Community Theater. Indicate yours interest in becoming part of a Community Theater group and find youth theater alumni who can recommend theater programs to you.

  5. Step 5

Inquire about opportunities with professional theaters. Many professional theaters offer special youth programs like classes, workshops and summer camps. Intern positions may also be available.

  6. Step 6

Enroll in private theater workshops. Theater arts workshops can help polish skills in directing, acting and writing. They may also help you apply to a competitive youth theater program.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be open to taking offstage theater positions. Many community and professional theaters require volunteers for their productions; volunteer your time and services to become acquainted with theater life and open yourself up to youth opportunities that may arise.
