Theater costumes are an important part of the production of a play. Sewing costumes for theater productions requires a basic knowledge of garment construction and sewing. Instead of purchasing costumes, sew theater costumes yourself. It saves money and increases creativity.

  1. Step 1

    Know the costume size for each actor in the play. Measure the actors for costumes if necessary. Take measurements for the chest, bust, waist, hips, back, arms, neck and head. These basic measurements cover any possible costume or accessory like a hat.

    Keep a record of measurements for reference. Create a file on the computer or write measurements on index cards. Refer back to the measurements when constructing costumes to ensure a quality fit.

  3. Step 3

    Research clothing for the time period and setting for the theater production. If the setting is a place like the ocean or a magical forest focus on their specific environmental elements. Talk with the director for any additional guidance.
