Flash drives or memory sticks are a great tool when saving and transferring documents. You can use a flash memory stick to save a large file easily, and can take it with you between work and home or any other computer you use.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Flash memory stick

Step1
Obtain a flash memory stick. Keep in mind that a file with pictures, images or audio and video information requires more space.
Step2
Turn on the computer that contains the file you'll be saving onto the flash drive. Open the "My Computer" folder and search through your folders until you find the document to be saved to the flash drive.
Step3
Plug the flash drive into the computer. The flash memory stick is plugged into the USB port. Use your computer manual to identify the USB ports if you're unsure what they are.
Step4
Verify that the computer recognized the device by looking for the text box to appear at the bottom of the screen. Open the "My Computer" folder if you want to further verify or the box did not appear to make sure that something appears in the removable hardware section or an additional hard or disk drive has appeared.
Step5
Save or copy and save the file to the flash drive. Click the file to be saved and copy it. Select the flash drive from the "My Computer" folder and paste the file. You can also choose to open the file, and select "Save As" and save it to the flash drive.

Tips & Warnings

  • Refer to the flash drive or your computers "Help" menu if the computer does not recognize the memory stick.
  • Flash memory sticks are both Mac and PC compatible so files can be transferred back and forth between the two systems if needed.
  • Flash drives can save any type of data including documents, spreadsheets, pictures, video and text files.
  • Some public or older model computers may not support the removable drive technology. You may need to use a different computer or install additional software.
