Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Clear an area to work in. If you're working inside, cover the area you're going to be using with a tarp or drop cloth. This is a good idea if you're going to be working in another area as well.

  2. Step 2

Decide what you want to do with the chair. Some club chairs have wood exposed so you'll need to decide how you want to change those areas. You can change the wood by stripping it and re-staining it in order to match your new upholstery.

  3. Step 3

Lay the chair so that the bottom is exposed. This is the first step in removing the staples that holds the fabric to the chair. Upholstery on a chair is actually staples on in pieces so to remove all the fabric all you need to do is remove all the staples.

  4. Step 4

Remove the staples at the bottom of the chair. This should release the edges of the fabric and allow you to move it so that you can get to the other staples in the chair. An easy way to remove the staples is just to use a Philips head screwdriver and wedge it under the staple and pulling up to remove it from the frame.

  5. Step 5

Remove all the staples and the fabric from the chair one piece at a time. As you remove and release one area of the upholstery, you will be able to move the fabric so that you can reach other areas where staples are.

  6. Step 6

Label each upholstery piece that you remove. You will want to use the original upholstery pieces as a pattern for creating the new cover for the chair so labeling each piece is key.

Tips & Warnings
  • If there are buttons on your club chair, these will need to be cut off. These are attached to the piece after the piece of fabric is put in place and they will most likely be sewn through the upholstery and stuffing underneath.
