Specific tools are needed to lay tile on an archway successfully. The types of tile and the amount required for an archway depends on size of the tile and the dimensions of the project. When selecting tile, consider speaking with a tile expert for recommendations. Once you have all the supplies, take your time with the project so the final product exceeds your expectations.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Level
  • Safety glasses
  • Glass cutter
  • Sponge
  • Clean rags
  • Pencil
  • Notched trowel
  • Mortar
  • Tile spacers
  • Long shim strips
Step1
Prepare the archway. Tiles need to be set onto a clean surface. Remove old paint, wallpaper and rough off any glossy finishes with sandpaper. Fill any holes and smooth them before being tiling the archway.
Step2
Apply masking tape over the edge of the archway to avoid unwanted mortar build up.
Step3
Prepare the grout and apply it to the archway with a wide putty knife. Use a notched trowel to create grooved application for even distribution on the tile. Start at the bottom and press the tiles firmly into the adhesive.
Step4
Use a level to ensure that the tiles are even after placing each row. Insert vinyl spacers as each tile is set to leave room for grout.
Step5
Use solvent to clean away adhesive. Remove any oozing adhesive before it dries. Drying takes about 30 minutes.
Step6
Fit the final center piece where the tiles meet at the center of the arch. Shaping may be required. When the tiles are placed in an inverted area, use a flexible wooden support strip until the mortar sets.
Step7
Mix grout until it's the consistency of peanut butter. Force it between the tiles. Wipe away extra grout and shape it with a toothbrush. Wipe away excess grout with a damp sponge.

Tips & Warnings

  • Ensure the tiles fit properly into the arched space. Different tile shapes may be necessary to get a perfect fit. Use a glass cutter to score tiles for shaping. Score the tile repeatedly before breaking it to size.
  • Ensure proper ventilation to avoid breathing in toxic adhesive fumes.
