How to Buy a Composite Bow
Composite bows have been around for centuries, impacting history. Because they are made from several materials, most likely wood, bone, and sinew, rather than one piece of wood, they can be small but still have as much power or more as a longbow. It takes a great deal of time to make the traditional composite bow so it is unfortunately becoming a lost art. There are plenty of modern versions available for purchase.

1
Decide if you want a traditionally made bow or one that is mass produced. The modern versions are composed of fiberglass. They are easier to take care of and less expensive. If your heart is set on a hand-crafted composite, there are a few bow makers that have preserved the art. When you order a hand-crafted bow, they will inform you of all the options before building your bow.

2
Determine how much you want to spend. Fiberglass bows can be as little as $20 to several hundred dollars. Hand-crafted composite bows range from $1800 to more than $3000.

3
Choose the draw weight. Try out a few bows before you buy your own to see what draw weight you are comfortable with and are able to pull the string back on. Do you prefer a 10, 25 or 30 pound draw?

4
Choose the AMO length. AMO stands for the Archery Manufacturers and Merchants Organization which determines all bow's standards. Composite bows are measured under a loaded tension from the outside of the pin to the opposite pin and then the tolerance after 20 seconds noted. The actual string length has nothing to do with the AMO length. Choose a length that corresponds comfortably to your draw weight.

5
Seek training. Any composite bow will require instruction on how to adjust and string them.
