How to Make a Safe

You can make your own safe to put into a wall of your home. In actuality it's more of a hiding place than a safe, and it can only hold small items. But it's big enough to stash some cash for a rainy day or whatever treasure you want to put out of sight. To make the safe even more secure, place it behind a piece of furniture.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 15 amp, 120 volt residential duplex receptacle
  • Single gang duplex wall plate
  • Single gang cut-in box
  • Roofing nails
  • Washers
  • Screwdriver
  • Pencil
  • Drywall saw
  1. Step 1

Widen the holes in the cut-in box where the screws normally go. Use a roofing nail or a screwdriver to do this. Make sure the roofing nail slides in and out easily. You may need to bend the little metal tab inside the hole slightly out of the way in order for the roofing nail to move properly.

  2. Step 2

Lay the box with its back on the table. Line up the holes of the electrical outlet with the holes on the box.

  3. Step 3

Place the roofing nails through the washers and then through the outlet holes. Then run the nails through the holes in the box. Screw down the faceplate.

  4. Step 4

Determine where you are going to place the wall safe. Put it at the same height as other outlets in the room. Also, make sure to place the wall safe in between wall studs.

  5. Step 5

Hold the box against the wall where you are going to place it. Trace around it with the pencil.

  6. Step 6

Cut the hole with the drywall saw. Be careful not to make the hole too big or the socket can appear wobbly, off-kilter and suspicious. You want your wall safe to blend in, not stand out in any way.

  7. Step 7

Slip the box in the hole you have created. Tighten the screws. You're now all set to use your new wall safe.
