Civil rights laws form an important foundation for the American way of life. The U.S. Constitution explicitly protects citizens and residents from certain injustices, and the workplace is no exception to this general rule. However, it can be difficult to identify civil rights injustice and enforce the correct laws. Learn to identify and enforce civil rights laws at work and uphold the notion of justice in this country.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Become aware of the current civil rights laws. Look online or contact your local attorney general's office to ensure that you have an updated listing of American civil rights laws.
Step2
Consult our human resources department to ensure that they have a copy of civil rights laws and uphold a standard to those laws. Check if your place of employment is an EEOC (Equal Employment Opportunity Corporation), since this designation will help you in enforcing any violations.
Step3
Watch out for things like cultural profiling, gender discrimination, sexual discrimination, religious discrimination, discrimination against people with disabilities or any other kind of discrimination. Make note of any discrepancies in civil rights codes that are made within your job.
Step4
Challenge things like dress code discrimination (less strict codes for men then women) as this is a clear indication that some sort of civil right is being illegally mandated by the company. Report any discrimination or grievance first to your human resources department and the EEOC.
Step5
Consult an attorney if there is any question whether a civil rights law or code has been violated. Be quite candid about your conviction to uphold civil rights codes with your human resources department. Follow through on all possible infractions.

Tips & Warnings

  • Know the laws well; it will be a good indication as to whether you have a basis for rment. Let the Human Resources department do its job before pursuing outside help.
  • Report any wrongdoings to your state EEOC office before attempting to file at the national level.
