Step 1
Count the number of joists in your deck frame. You will need two joist connectors for every joist. For example, if your deck consists of 8 joists, you will need to buy 16 joist connectors. Do not count the outside frame when figuring the number needed.
-
Step 2
Measure the width of the joists. Most are either 1½ inches or 2 inches wide. You must purchase the same size joist connectors as the width of your joists. They have a pre-formed section that fits over the joist and it must be snug, so measure carefully.
-
Step 3
Determine if you have double joists in your deck frame. Double joists are just two 1½-inch joists installed side by side. If you have double joists, you must purchase double joist connectors that are 3-inches wide.
-
Step 4
Look to see if your deck has I-joists. You can determine this by looking at the shape. An I-joist has a cross-section just like the letter "I." You will need to buy connectors that specify they are for I-joists, in that case. They have an additional tab that fits over the rim of the joist.

Step 5
Choose galvanized steel-joist hangars to prevent eventual rusting.
