Building a form for a poured concrete wall isn't usually the easiest of tasks. However, if you follow these simple steps, it can become an easy weekend project for both the seasoned handy homeowner and the unseasoned homeowner alike.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2-by-4s
  • Hammer
  • 1-by-8s
  • Cleats
  • Nails
  • Level
  1. Step 1

Determine the length that your wall forms have to be and the number of forms that you need. You determine the overall length of the forms by measuring the perimeter of your project. Then, determine how many forms you need to fill in that space. It's best to keep the forms small enough that four men are able to put them in place. If you're working by yourself, though, you want each section to be smaller.

  2. Step 2

Drive 2-by-4s into the ground at 3- to 4-foot intervals around the perimeter of your project to create the posts for the wall forms. Make sure to pound the two-by-fours into the earth far enough so as to not bend or twist when there's pressure exerted on them.

  3. Step 3

Create panels with 1-by-8s. Make the panels as tight as possible so that no concrete can squeeze between the cracks and harden.

  4. Step 4

Attach the panels together with cleats. Stagger the cleats so that they come between the two-by-fours that make up the forms.

  5. Step 5

Nail the panels to the forms and cut off the 2-by-4s to match the top of the panels.

  6. Step 6

Check the forms to make sure they're level and securely attached. You're now ready to pour concrete walls.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use double-headed nails to attach the panels to the forms for easier removal.
  • You can use any waste wood instead of buying 1-by-8s to create the panels.
