Cowboy Action Shooting is becoming more popular all the time and clubs can be found in every state in the US, plus some in Europe and Australia. It's a fun way for gun enthusiasts to socialize and polish their shooting skills, while keeping alive some of the romance of the Old West. So load your guns and head out to the next Cowboy Action Shooting match.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Single action handguns
  • Lever action rifle
  • Double barreled shotgun
  • Holsters
  • Ammunition
  • Period costume, including hat and boots
  • Safety glasses with side shields
  • Ear plugs
  • Gun cart
  1. Step 1

Attend a shoot to get a feel for the sport. Log on to SASS (Single Action Shooting Society) website and find a club near you. Call the contact person and ask when and where the club meets. Most are eager for new members and someone will usually loan you some gear to practice with.

  2. Step 2

Purchase or borrow gear. You'll need two single action pistols, a lever-action rifle and a shotgun which are original 19th century or replica pieces with ammunition, holsters for the pistols, and period clothing. Also, you'll want a cart for carrying your guns and ammo from stage to stage.

  3. Step 3

Join SASS. You'll be required to pick a stage name when you join and that is the name you'll compete under. Your name will be something relating to the Old West and only you will be able to use that name or one that sounds like it.

  4. Step 4

Enter a contest. Plan to arrive early to fill out necessary paperwork at your first shoots. You might also be required to qualify before the shoot.

  5. Step 5

Get your gear and costume ready the night before the contest to avoid missing some needed item. Costumes need not be elaborate, but need to have a cowboy flair. Try to dress the part of the character name you picked when you joined SASS.

  6. Step 6

Practice gun safety and enjoy Cowboy Action Shooting.

Tips & Warnings
  • Boots are normally required as part of the western garb, but choose comfortable boots with a low heel and ones in which you can maneuver quickly.
  • Hats are a requirement, and men can't wear straw hats, although women can. Hats should be appropriate to the rest of the costume.
  • Safety glasses with side shields are required when shooting or when you are near any shooting, along with very good in-ear hearing protection.
  • Learn gun safety before handling a gun. Have a knowledgeable friend teach you or take a class.
  • Don't point a gun at another person, whether it is loaded or unloaded.
