If you want to get your competitive sports fix, there are many sports games to play online. You can play a variety of different kinds of games, from text-based to arcade style, real-time to games that take days, weeks and even months to complete.   1. Step 1

    Do an Internet search for web-based sports games. There are many games available that can be played on your web browser. Most games are played using your mouse, your keyboard or a combination of both. Most of these web-based games require a Java plug-in. If you don't have one already installed, you will be prompted to download one when you attempt to play the game.

  2. Step 2

    Play an installed or console sports game online. Most sports games, whether for the PC, Xbox or PlayStation, come with online play capability. Look in the options menu on your game to see if this option is available. You can play against human players over your Internet connection.

  3. Step 3

    Participate in a fantasy sports leagues. These games are not played in real time but can be just as competitive. Yahoo! Sports and ESPN offer fantasy sports leagues that can be played for free online. Draft your team and play against others for the length of an entire baseball, football, basketball, hockey or other sport season.

  4. Step 4

    Find other text-based games, such as sports trivia games. These text-based games don't usually require any extra plug-ins or software and can be played in just your web browser.
