As you pursue your dream of becoming a landscape designer, an internship will give you valuable experience. It prepares you for an entry-level job and makes you a more attractive candidate to potential employers. Each university program has their own set of requirements. Some colleges require you to work with a landscape design firm. Others will let you do a practicum in a garden. Read on to learn how to do a landscape design internship.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Seek advice from a school/college counselor. Talk to them about your landscape design career plans. They are a valuable source of information and can help steer you in the right direction.
Step2
Check out your school's resources. High schools, colleges and trade schools usually compile tons of information about internship programs, scholarships and the like. It take a little bit of time, but make an effort to go through all those resources.
Step3
Call local landscape design businesses. Explain your situation and learning goals. Ask them if they are accepting interns at this time. Think outside the box. Golf courses, state and national parks are all places where landscape design is of utmost importance.
Step4
Meet with potential employers. Dress for success and go to the interview prepared. Explain why you want to be a part of their team, what you are hoping to learn and how you would be an asset to their company.
Step5
Set a schedule and stick to it. Work hard, offer to help wherever needed, and prove your abilities. Develop relationships with your co-workers. Show them that you're willing to do whatever is needed, get your hands dirty and learn from the best.
Step6
Complete all requirements for school credit, if applicable. This may include papers or presentations.
Step7
Stay in touch. The door to a job in the real world is often opened by someone you get to know during your internship. If you prove yourself to be a valuable employee, with lots of potential, your chances of being hired are even better.

Tips & Warnings

  • Before your landscaping design internship is completed, ask your manager if you can use them as a reference.
  • While you're looking for a job, follow up with your internship manager every few months regarding openings.
