Things You'll Need:
- Black tights
- Black gloves
- Black fabric
- White fabric, sheer and opaque
-
Step 1
Get several comic books with Spider-Man in them and study them carefully. Make sure you have images of Spidey's front and back before you begin. Measure the proportions of red fabric to blue, which will help you determine how much red fabric to buy. Study the pattern of the webbing, counting the lines and measuring the space between them.
-
Step 2
Find a pair of blue tights in your size, preferably medium or dark blue. (If the sleeves only go as far as your forearms, don't worry about it. Peter Parker designed his costume with forearm-length sleeves so that he can wear the costume under street clothes and still roll up his sleeves.)
-
Step 3
Dye a pair of mid-calf boots red or purchase pre-made boot covers. Make or obtain matching red gloves.
-
Step 4
Cut out the fabric to cover Spidey's chest, breastbone, navel, waist, shoulder blades and the outsides of his upper arms. Also cut out the pieces of fabric to make his mask, cutting out teardrop-shaped eye slots large enough to allow good peripheral vision.
-
Step 5
Trace the pattern of the webbing on the red fabric with a fabric pencil. Go over these tracings with either a black fabric marker, black fabric paint, or satin stitch over the lines with either black or white embroidery thread (to simulate the look of Tobey McGuire's costume). The webbing should appear contiguous between the mask and chest.
-
Step 6
Duplicate the chest and back spider logos by cutting them out of black and red fabric, respectively. The chest logo should show an elongated head and abdomen, with the four forward legs pointing up and the four rearward legs pointing down. The back logo should feature a nearly circular fused head and thorax with the legs radiating out in a downward part, more closely resembling a tick than a spider.
-
Step 7
Craft eye lenses out of teardrop-shaped pieces of sheer white fabric or translucent white plastic surrounded with a black fabric border. Sew the lenses into the mask and the rest of the red fabric onto the shirt of the tights.
-
Step 1
Get "Spider-Man" comic books from the Secret Wars era, circa 1984, or which featured his early partnership with the Black Cat. These issues feature the black alien symbiote costume.
-
Step 2
Find a pair of black tights in your size.
-
Step 3
Buy or make a matching mask, pair of gloves and boots. (You may want boot covers as well as gloves to provide a unified look.)
-
Step 4
Cut out chest and back spider logos from white fabric. Both logos should be large and resemble the body of a black widow, sans hourglass, with the legs forming a "W" pattern.
-
Step 5
Make large teardrop-shaped eye holes in the mask and attach pieces of sheer white fabric to cover the eyes. (Omit the eye-covers if making the costume for a young child.)
-
Step 6
Attach white semicircles to the backs of the gloves. On this costume, the web-shooters were located here.
