Step 1
Learn the abbreviations. Crocheters have a shorthand that rivals the military's love for acronyms. You should become familiar with some basic abbreviations-- for example: ch = chain, dc = double crochet, lp = loop, yo = yarn over and st = stitch.
-
Step 2
Find a pattern online, through a fellow crocheter or in a book. Think about the kind of blanket you want. Some alternatives are to give the blanket the look of lace or to make it tightly stitched and solid. You might be interested in creating a certain kind of pattern, or you might just want a simple solid color or two-color pattern.
-
Step 3
Gather your materials. When choosing your yarn, always take advice from your pattern. Keep in mind that cotton yarns are nice for sensitive skin, while acrylic blends are easy for mom to keep clean.
-
Step 4
Start your foundation chain. Create a slipknot around your hook and wrap the yarn around the hook, moving toward your body. Push your hook and yarn down through the slipknot loop. Continue until you have created the size you want.
-
Step 5
Work your stitches until you have a good size baby blanket. Ideally, your blanket should be 34 to 36 inches on a side. If you want to make crib sheets, however, you'll need to make your blanket much larger.
