How to Knit a Windmill Pattern

Contrary to what its name suggests, the windmill knit pattern does not create a picture of a windmill while you knit, but creates a checked design. It is a combination of different counts of knit and purl stitches that works best for large projects. You can also use this soft pattern for baby items, like blankets or sweaters. Read on to learn how to knit a windmill pattern.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Knitting needles (any size)
  • Yarn
  1. Step 1

    Cast on 12, 24 or other multiples of 12 stitches. The windmill pattern is 12 stitches long, so you must cast on these multiples to get the full pattern.

  2. Step 2

    Knit one, purl five, knit five and purl one. Repeat the pattern until you reach the end of the row. This is row one.

  3. Step 3

    Work row two by knitting two, purling four, knitting four and purling two. Finish the row by repeating the pattern across the remaining stitches.

  4. Step 4

    Create row three by knitting three, purling three, knitting three and purling three. Repeat the pattern across all stitches to finish the row.

  5. Step 5

    Start by knitting four, then purl two, knit two and purl four. Repeat the pattern until you reach the end of the row. This completes row four.

  6. Step 6

    Begin by knitting five, then purl one, knit one and purl five. Repeat the pattern across all stitches to complete this row. The is row five.

  7. Step 7

    Craft row six by knitting six and then purling six. Repeat the pattern across all stitches to finish row.

  8. Step 8

    Purl six and then knit six. To complete the row, repeat pattern across remaining stitches. This is row seven.

  9. Step 9

    Finish the windmill pattern by repeating row five, four, three, two and one, in that order. Next, repeat rows six and seven to finish the pattern. Cast off to complete your swatch of the windmill pattern.
