How to Throw Punches Effectively
Throwing a punch effectively involves more than just making a fist, taking aim and swinging your arm. In order for a punch to connect with its target with meaningful impact, the right timing must be combined with the proper technique. Here are some tips to help you throw punches effectively.

1
Focus on your target. Stand directly in front of your target so that the middle of your body is centered with the target. Punching from the side or at an angle could result in you not connecting or just striking a glancing blow.

2
Plant your feet. When facing your target, bend your knees slightly and plant your feet firmly on the ground. This will establish a good center of gravity for you and keep you steady when you punch.

3
Punch with your whole body. The power behind your punch should not come from just your arm, but from your entire body. Once your feet are firmly planted on the ground, rotate your upper body in the direction of your target so that the force of your entire body is behind the punch.

4
Keep your thumb outside your fist. Position your hand so that your thumb is outside the rest of your fingers, not curled underneath the rest of them. If you tuck your thumb under your fingers you risk jamming or hurting your thumb when you punch.

5
Loosen your fingers. Believe it or not, punching with a tightly wound hand could injure you just as much as you injure your target. Instead, keep your fingers loosely curled until the moment of impact.

Punch like you mean it. If you're going to throw a punch, punch like you mean it and act like you do. If you only throw with partial strength or you act like you're not sure about whether or not you should be throwing the punch, your confidence won't be behind your punch, it won't be effective and you could actually pull a muscle or hurt yourself by only punching halfway.
