Henna is a plant most commonly used in hair care as a dye, but it can also be combined with mustard oil to treat hair loss. Henna has been scientifically proven to bond well with other proteins, making it effective in stimulating the growth of healthy hair while adding a nice reddish-brown color to certain hair types.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Mustard oil
  • Henna
  • Glass or heat-resistant container
  • Lemon juice
  • Curd
  • Large pot
  1. Step 1

Purchase fresh henna leaves and mustard oil from a local store or through an online vendor. Henna leaves are commonly sold in stores that specialize in Indian foods, though they are often sold in the form of powder for use as hair and body dye. It's important to use fresh henna leaves. Henna loses its strength over time.

  2. Step 2

Boil about 1/4 liter of mustard oil in a large pot. Use a medium-to-high heat and be careful to stand a safe distance from the pot while protecting your eyes. Boiling oil tends to splatter.

  3. Step 3

Slowly add a handful of henna leaves to the pot of boiling mustard oil. Leave the henna leaves in the oil until they burn and turn reddish brown.

  4. Step 4

Filter the mustard oil through a cloth or strainer and pour it into a glass or heat-resistant container for storage. Throw out the henna leaves after they cool. Allow the mustard oil to sit overnight and cool completely before using it.

  5. Step 5

Add a dash of lemon juice and 1 tbsp. of curd to the oil to create a paste. Multiply the recipe, depending on the length of your hair and how much color you want to add. Darker hair types will most likely not display as much color as a result of using the henna paste as gray or blonde hair types might.

  6. Step 6

Massage the henna and mustard oil paste into your scalp and through your hair. Leave it on for about 4 hours, and then rinse off completely with water. Allow your hair to dry before adding any other hair care products. Repeat this treatment once a month.

Tips & Warnings
  • Store henna in your freezer, and you can use it for up to 1 year.
  • Henna used on gray hair may drastically change its color.
