1. Get a professional medical opinion as to whether cat's claw can help your diabetes. If the usual medical means of managing the condition are proving effective, you might not want to add cat's claw because of the risk of additional side effects and allergic reactions.

2. Talk to an accredited alternative medicine expert or your doctor to determine the dosage level of cat's claw that is right for you. You should use about 100 to 350 mg of cat's claw per day in capsule form, or take 2 to 3 doses of 1/4 to 1/2 a tbsp. if you use tincture.

3. Monitor your blood sugar levels closely and note any changes. Note the degree to which using cat's claw affects your blood sugar levels and adjust your lifestyle accordingly. If it does not appear to affect your blood sugar levels, or you're experiencing side effects, discontinue its use.

4. Anticipate the side effects that are commonly associated with cat's claw.
