Motion sickness is a sensation that occurs due to a combination of sensory experiences that cause a conflict in the brain. Common symptoms of motion sickness include nausea, vomiting, dizziness and fatigue. Ginger is believed to be an effective remedy for the symptoms of nausea.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Pick a form of ginger. It can be eaten in its natural root form, as an ingredient in various Asian foods and in herbal supplement tablets or capsules. Ginger teas, ginger ale and ginger extract in liquid form are also popular, as are ginger candies and lozenges.

  2. Step 2

Eat or drink ginger at least 30 minutes before driving or boarding a boat or plane. Let the ginger take effect before you begin your trip. Finish the entire serving before you begin traveling and get plenty of fresh air before you board.

  3. Step 3

Pack ginger in your carry-on luggage if you are taking a long flight or boat trip. Most likely, the ginger's effects will only last between 4 to 6 hours, so you may need to ingest it again while you are in transit. Limit your ginger intake to 3 servings per day.

  4. Step 4

Eat small amounts of bland, carbohydrate-heavy food and drink large amounts of water while traveling. Crackers, toast and rice are good to eat with ginger to help keep your stomach stabilized. Spicy or greasy food may contribute to the nausea you may experience as a result of motion sickness.

  5. Step 5

Talk to your doctor if symptoms of motion sickness become too severe or if you vomit often during travel. Ginger may not work for everyone, and it should never be viewed as an alternative to a doctor's advice. It's possible that your symptoms may be related to a more serious condition than motion sickness.

Tips & Warnings
  • Pregnant women should always consult their doctors or primary-care physicians before deciding to use ginger to treat motion sickness or other types of nausea.
