Who's kidding whom? A high percentage of Baby Boomers smoked pot in their younger days and are now faced with the task of convincing their teenagers to lay off. Your experiences can be a valuable tool.

Instructions

Difficulty: Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Enough guts to admit past failings to your kids.

Step1
Call your kids in for a chat sometime between their 13th and 14th birthdays.
Step2
Create an informal atmosphere. Make certain your tone is coversational rather than lecturing.
Step3
Ask your child about his thoughts on the subject of marijuana. If they are thoroughly negative, confirm his view and let him know you will always be there for him if he has any questions or concerns about it. There will be no need to take it any further.
Step4
If your child expresses a curiosity about pot or even admits to having smoked it, let her know about your experiences. Don't exaggerate the negative effects. But tell her firmly about how it influenced your life. Make certain your child understands that pot curbs motivation, increases paranoid tendencies and is a health risk.
Step5
Answer any questions your child might have honestly. Tell him that if you could turn back the clock you would have never smoked pot because it brought nothing positive to your life.

Tips & Warnings

  • Monitor your child's behavior. It will not be a disaster if she experiments with pot on rare occasions, but foster a relationship in which she will be free to admit to using it. Discuss it openly, but always voice your disapproval and take harsher steps if the frequency of pot smoking increases.
  • Don't go overboard in your reactions. Telling your child that he is destined for a life of drug addiction simply because he tries pot will bring nothing but ridicule and solve nothing.

on 6/3/2008 Ok, hold on. Your facts are a little... expiried. The government performed tests to check if marijuana was harmful to humans both in the 1950's and in the late 70's...true. But did you know that these test were done on monkeys at near lethal dose? Scientists who study it now, know that it is, for the most part, good for you. For these reasons it has been legalized in 11 states and over 30 countries. One last thing, im 15. If a fifteen year old can pull these facts on you, then you need to update your approach to the subject. a bit more tactical maybe?
