How to Make Soft Pretzels With Kids

This a fun and easy activity for rainy days. It also helps eye-hand coordination, even for kids as young as three years old.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Cookie sheet
  • Measuring tools.[Cups and spoons].
  • One package yeast.
  • One and a half cups warm water.
  • One teaspoon of salt.
  • One tablespoon of sugar.
  • Four to five cups of flour.
  • Salt.
  • One beaten egg.
Step1
Have all ingredients measured and set in the middle of the kitchen table.
Step2
Have the kids wash their and dry their hands. Seat them around the table.
Step3
Let the kids take turns pouring items into the mixing bowl. First combine the water and yeast. Kids take turns stirring the mixture. Add the sugar and salt. Add flour until you have a soft and ply-able dough.
Step4
Divide dough equally among the kids. Have them knead the dough on a floured surface for about five minutes. Have kids shape their dough any way they like,only not too thick. Place pieces on the cookie sheet. Brush with egg mixture and sprinkle with salt (adult must closely supervise this).
Step5
Adult will put pan into a 425 degree oven. They will bake for five minutes, or until golden. Enjoy with juice or milk.

Tips & Warnings

  • Put aprons or larger shirts over the kid's clothes so thet won't get full of flour.
  • Do not allow children to touch the hot pan when it comes out of the oven.
