This article will show you ways to reduce the symptoms of fevers. Fever is the body' s early warning system to inform you that there is something not right. Normal body temperature is 98.6 degree farenheit but remember children have slightly higher normal body temperature.

Step1
Take a temperature with thermometer. There are many various types of thermometer available on the market although the older mercury thermometers are more difficult to find nowadays because of the toxic mercury used in them. Paper disposable thermometers are cheap, quick and convenient to use. Place the thermometer under the tongue in the pockets of mouth towards the left or right side of the cheek. Leave the thermometer in place for 3 minutes and them read the temperature.

Wear comfortable clothing and material for the body to "breathe", like cotton and linen. This allows the body to perspire and the temperature to dissipate more easier. Wear in layers do you can easily take of the clothing according to how you feel.

Drink lots of fluid and water to replenish the liquid loss due to the fever. Fruit juices and vegetable juices can replace the essential nutrients loss form sweating, vomiting associated with the fever. Beet juice and carrot or orange juices are popular favorites.

Herbal remedies can be helpful. Use Linden tea which induces sweating to break the fever. One tablespoon of the flowers in one cup of boiling water.

try Willow bark which in rich in salicylates, aspirin related compound, and helps to reduce fever and pain. Use in tea drinks.

Use cold compresses for relief from fevers and reduce the body's temperature. Apply the compresses to the forehead, wrist and calves. You casn use gels and cold packs which are kept cold in the frigde and wrpa in cotton flannel before placing on to the body.

Use a wet sponge and wipe the body and face frequently since evaporation helps to reduce the temperature and accelerate the dissipation of heat. Wring out a sponge and wipe a section of the body at a time keeping the rest of the body covered.

Usr over the counter medications like NSAIDS, like acetaminophen and aspirin, to reduce fevers and muscle pain and aches. Take acetaminophen if you are allergic to aspirin or have gastrointestinal problems.

A good way to find relief from shivering from fever is to take a long warm shower. Find ways to reduce stress and relax. Aromatherapy and sleep can help during these times.

Maintain good ventilation and comfortable temperature in the room. Don't overheat and keep a window slightly open to prevent stuffiness in the air and to allow fresh air into the space. Be careful to avoid drafts. Don't let the room overheat above 65 degree farenheit.

Sometimes with a fever you don't feel like eating and lose your appetite. That alright for a few days bit keep up with the intake of fluids to prevent dehydration. When you can take food try liquid foods like soups and broth or fruit juices.

Some organic and herbal teas are helpful for reducing symptoms of fever. Chamomile thyme and linden flower can all help and are available in most health food stores. Thyme has antiseptic properties and chamomile reduces inflammation and linden promotes sweating.

ICE is a good way for combating nausea and vomitting during a high fever and keeping the fluid intake to prevent dehydration. A good idea is to make fruit juice ice cubes and place into the freezer until it is needed.

Sleep and rest is the best way to get over the fever. Also use dim lighting during these times and reduce noise pollution to a minimal to help reduce the level headaches that usually accompany fevers.

  • Keep a bucket or container nearby and handy in case you feel like vomiting.
  • keep fresh water in jug and cover with lid nearby to have fluids handy to prevent from dehydration.
  • Seek immediate medical care when the fever is associated with stiff neck, fever above 101 degrees farenheit for over three days or fever over 103 degree farenheit.
  • Young babies and children and elderly people, especially people with chronic illnesses such as heart or respiratory disease can not tolerate prolonged high fevers without long-term complications. Seek immediate medical care.
